Stafford Carson Named Dean of Students

By

David B. Garner

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Rev. Dr. J. Stafford Carson, President's Professor and Franker Barker Chair of Missions and Evangelism, is stepping into the role of Interim Dean of Residential Students as of this month.

Stafford was Westminster’s executive vice president and academic dean from 2000–2005.  From 2013–2020, he served as principal of Union Theological College in Northern Ireland. He has been Senior Director of Global Ministries for Westminster since 2022, and will continue to provide leadership to the Global Ministries programs. After completing his degree at Westminster, he returned to Ireland to serve in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, where he has served three congregations.

In an interview, he said of his time studying at Westminster, "I enjoyed everything! I loved church history, and biblical theology especially. I wanted to be able to open the Bible and make sense of the whole flow of redemptive history. It was at Westminster that I felt a call to ministry. I remember reflecting on John Frame’s words that 'theology is the application of the Word of God to all of life' and realizing that the study of theology should not occur in a vacuum or be a purely intellectual pursuit."

Stafford and his wife Patricia have been married for 47 years. They have three children and two grandchildren.
